What is the Merlin engine?
The Merlin engine was developed by Rolls-Royce, a British automobile maker. During the World War II the Rolls-Royce Merlin was installed on many fighter planes, most notably on the British Spitfire and the USAF P-51 Mustang. It is considered to be the most successful reciprocating engine for military aircraft.
※ reciprocating engine: A type of heat engine that uses one or more reciprocating pistons to convert pressure into a rotating motion. Also known as a piston engine.
Voice from the developer
The Merlin engine was liquid-cooled while the engine used for Zero fighters was air-cooled. Both were representative engines used in the same era but their structure is totally different. I hope you can compare the difference. We reproduced the Rolls-Royce Merlin with great attention to detail.
